Being distracted is the norm. Hearing the beginning of what someone is saying and then zoning out. Asking someone’s name and then promptly forgetting it. Not remembering how we got from A -B. Where did the food on my plate go? Where did this flippin headache come from? Ya know?!

Awareness is the antidote. Coming back to ‘now’ and ‘now’ again. It requires a light-hearted intelligent approach. It’s a valuable practice – arguably the most valuable. I can be busy with anything but if I’m not aware of myself, my triggers, my habits and how to disentangle myself from them – it’s for naught. Its still the same distracted me in the exercise class; its still the same pulled and misaligned me on the walk; it’s still me with my locked jaw getting more tense by the minute in relation to a perceived urgency, its still me stuck in traffic not breathing. Yip wherever we go – there we are.

It’s so interesting and important to bring curiosity, quietening and kindness to ourselves because as ‘subtle’ as it is – it’s the necessary path towards health and wellbeing.

Awareness is, crucially, non-judgemental. We have to resist jumping into the ‘good’/ ‘bad’; ‘right’/ ‘wrong’ paradigms. Practicing whole, bottomless curiosity and learning how to steer the ship back onto easy waters. Does that metaphor even work? You get my point. “Easy waters” is when I am present in my mind/body and available for breath and available to choose. Trying to balance the world and ourselves in relation to each other. Neck free. Spine long and curvy. Doing less. Noticing more.
