Today’s mini freedom practice for the tongue is around being a little more conscious and aware of the tongue and how we can think of the tongue so that it can do its many jobs more effectively.
Start by moving the tongue around your mouth. Feel the teeth, the gums, front and back of the mouth, fold and rotate your tongue. Gently, with curiosity. Neck free. Notice the shape of your tongue and how much space it takes up in your mouth. Induce a swallow and feel the undulating movement of the tongue.
Let your tongue lie now on the floor of your mouth with the tip lightly touching the back of the bottom teeth. To be very precise the tip of the relaxed tongue will touch the place where the bottom teeth grow out of the gums. Thinking of letting the whole tongue lie fully and quietly. There needs to be some space in your mouth so release your jaw. Breathe through your nose.
Stay here for a moment or two. Is your tongue struggling to stay in this place? Is it moving involuntarily? Make sure you are not holding tension in your jaw, shoulders, your breathing, your eyes. Your whole self-taking conscious orders to soften and expand. Release your jaw to open your mouth and give your tongue a good stretch – pointing your tongue to the 4 cardinal directions. Stretch.
Let your tongue in and once again let it rest on the floor of your mouth, thick and relaxed. Breath in – sigh out. Reset. Happy tongue. 😊
